Luo Shu Chart
(Translator’s note: The Luo Shu Chart is constructed as a three by three magic square. Each grid or chamber is known as a palace and has directional implication)
The Luo Shu Chart was the blueprint for the Chart of the Beginning, which is also known as the magic square to western feng shui practitioners. The paragraphs below illustrated some of its features.
The magic square charts for all terrestrial directions in different periods of the three eras are derived from the Luo Shu Chart. The sum of the numerals in the two grids opposite each other is always 10.
Even numbers, have yin attribute, are referred to as the earth. They reside in the inter-cardinal positions. Uneven numbers are yang, referred to as heaven, reside in the cardinal positions. The yin and yang numbers are pairing up together either vertically or horizontally in the Luo Shu Chart. One is responsible for initiating a transformation, while the other is for concluding it. When they come together, they combine to form a new element. This will generate a new phase (element) in the ever-transforming cycle of nature.
All matters in the universe are undergoing change continuously. When viewed through a numerical model, the change is mediated by the numeral ‘5’. Five represents the heaven and the earth. When ‘5 ‘is added to an initiating number, it becomes the concluding number. So when they combine, they will be transformed into a new element, a new kind of vital energy. As ‘5’ symbolizes earth, thus earth element is considered as a creator and, at the same time, a destroyer of the matters in the universe.
The intricate, successive change of the initiating and concluding numerical is mediated by ‘5’. ‘5 ‘enables the heaven and their corresponding earth number to combine. Five is referred to as the ‘earth’ terrestrial branches of Wu and Ji, and it is involved in the transformation of all matters.
In the diagram, when the initiating number is subtracted from the corresponding concluding number, the remainder is 5. When ‘5’ is put in the cardinal positions, their summation is 25.
In the diagram, when the numerals of the concluding numbers are changed to those of the initiating numbers, the sum of the numbers opposite one another in the square is 5. The sum of them is 25.
The Luo Shu Chart also symbolizes the succession changes in seasons and weather.
‘One’ is the first numeral of the 9 flying stars. When 1 is placed in the centre, compositing on a Luo Shu Chart, and the other eight numerals (stars) are positioned according to the defined sequences, 6 will reside in the grid which is occupied by 1. Similarly, 7 will reside in the grid with 2; 8 reside in the grid with 3 and 9 reside in the grid with 4. As 1,2,3,4 are symbols for initiation, when they are placed in conjunction with their corresponding concluding numbers in the same grid, they will combine in harmony and form a new element.
“Nine” is the last numeral of the 9 flying stars. When 9 is placed in the centre , compositing on a Luo Shu Chart, and the remaining eight numerals (stars) are positioned accordingly, 1 will reside in the grid occupied by 6. Similarly, 2 will reside in grid with 7, 3 will reside in grid with 8, 4 will reside in grid with 9. As 6,7,8,9 are symbols for conclusion, when they are in conjunction with their corresponding initiating number, they combine in harmony and transform to a new element.
The Luo Shu Chart becomes the star chart that we use to formulate the location of different kinds of vital breath of a building. Each grid of the square is known as a palace. The nature of five elements in these palaces is as follow:
The Luo Shu chart has the heaven gate, earth gate, birth door and the death door. The heaven gate refers to the north-west palace. It is where the sequential flight of flying stars begins. The earth gate is at the south-east palace, where the flight of flying stars ends.
The birth door and the death door allow the transition of vital breath through the passage in the three eras. Its principle is illustrated by the Luo Shu Chart with 5 entering the centre, and then proceeds in ascending and descending orders.
The diagram below shows the star charts from period 1 to period 9, with 5 entering the centre and proceed in descending order.
The diagram below shows the Li Chi charts from period 1 to period 9, with 5 entering the centre and proceed in ascending order.
When ‘2’ and ‘8’ exchange their positions, there will be generation and termination of all matters. This also illustrates the relationship of birth door and death door.
The diagram below shows the five elements is different position of the Luo Shu Chart.
